常用委婉语

上一期介绍了为什么要在学术英语中使用委婉语，本期继续这个话题，来聊一聊什么时候要用委婉语以及常用的委婉语类型。

委婉语的使用是同学们在写作中不太到位的地方。下面是一位同学在写作课的课堂习作，是一篇议论文的一个支撑段，题目是要同学论述在商业活动中是否应该坚持商业道德，有的同学认为经济利益比商业道德重要，有的同学认为应该坚持商业道德，下面这位同学支持第二种观点。

According to Ingram, Skinner & Taylor (2005) (who) collected data from 334 consumers, with the going up of the harm caused by corporate’s unethical behaviors, the discontent of customers will grow and they will finally give up on the products of the company. In conclusion, practicing unethical business customs will lead to the loss of consumers.

在这个短短的支撑段里，作者使用一个研究作为证据来证明不道德的商业行为会使消费者不再购买该公司产品，因此会影响公司的经济收益，所以应该坚持商业道德。

能够在课堂有限的时间里找到证据来支撑自己的论点是非常不错的，虽然作者可以给出该研究更多的细节，来使读者了解这几位研究者是如何得出消费者不选择不道德公司产品的，提供更多的研究方法的细节可以使读者更加信服。但这不是本期讨论的内容。我们的重点是最后一句，In conclusion, practicing unethical business customs will lead to the loss of consumers.

作者的意思是，不道德商业行为将导致顾客流失。使用将来时will的意思是这件事在将来一定会发生，是一个非常肯定的描述。和上期图门模型的例子对比下，这个claim和Rick will get seriously sunburnt是一样的，同样给了结论full commitment，认为一定会如此。

因此，作者在做这个claim: unethical business practice will lead to the loss of consumers的时候，没有考虑论证要素rebuttal，使得自己的结论非常容易被推翻。比如，虽然某公司有了不道德的商业行为，但是公众并不知道，那么会一定导致顾客流失么？此外，作者此处只引用了一个研究，有其他研究发现了相反的结果也不是没有可能。因此，为了和事实更接近，在陈述claim时可以加入委婉语，改为Unethical business practice may lead to the loss of customers.

虽然只是将will改成may，但这并不是一个简单地换掉一个词，而是考虑了可能的例外情况和opposing views之后，将conclusion改得更接近事实的行为。学术写作是一个严谨论证的过程，是否使用委婉语和rebuttal有很大关系。

那么，除了may，和上期提到的probably，还有什么常用委婉语么？

Hyland (1996) 收集了26篇分子生物学期刊论文，通过对论文中的委婉语进行分析，找到了该体裁中委婉语的主要形式和功能。虽然是期刊论文，但同样适用其他体裁的学术写作。

主要类型有以下几种，

(1)Modal verbs: may, might, could

(2)Lexical verbs: suggest, indicate, tend to, appear, propose, reckon

(3)Adjectives, adverbs, nouns: probably, possibly, possibility, likely, presumably, supposedly, allegedly

(4)Strategic discourse-based hedges

前三种委婉语都很好理解，这里不再累述。最后一种，语篇委婉语，如名字所示，就是比词汇长的委婉语，从Hyland的文章摘两个例子：

We do not know whether the increase in intensity of illumination from 250 to ...

One cannot exclude a possibility that the activity of EF-2 Kinase in wheat germ is inhibited at a given stage of ontogenesis in some manner ...

两句中都通过委婉语表达了对从句中claim真实性的保留态度。

正如Hyland在文章中所说，“In scientific writing hedging is central to effective argument and the rhetorical means of gaining reader acceptance of claims, allowing writers to convey their attitude to the truth of their statements and anticipate possible objections.” 委婉语包含的是作者对自己陈述真实性的态度，并不是简单的替换掉表示绝对的词，不是纯粹的客气和礼貌，而是认真思考后在语言上的体现。
